چکیده

abstract due to calcareous soil conditions, zinc deficiency is a yield limiting factor for wheat production in iran. one solution for this problem is the cultivation of zn-efficient wheat varieties. ten wheat cultivars (nine bread wheat and one durum wheat) with different tolerance to zn deficiency were studied in a greenhouse experiment. plants were treated with zn (10 mg zn kg-1 soil as znso4.7h2o) and without it. based on the results of pot experiment, two wheat cultivars with different zn efficiency were selected to assess the ability of phytosiderophore release from their roots. visual zn deficiency symptoms, such as light colored necrotic patches and reduction in plant height appeared more severe in alvand, mahdavi (bread wheat) and yavares (durum wheat) cultivars. under zn deficiency, shoot dry matter decreased in most cultivars. zn efficiency of wheat cultivars ranged from 80.4% to 106.2%. based on shoot dry weight, pishtaz and darab were the most zn-efficient and alvand and mahdavi were the most zn-inefficient wheat cultivars. zn supply markedly increased the zn concentration and content of shoots of all cultivars. cultivars differed in zn uptake under zn-deficient and zn-sufficient conditions. on average, zn-efficient cultivars had more zn uptake efficiency compared to zn-inefficient cultivars. our results strongly suggested that sensitivity to zn deficiency varied widely among wheat cultivars. different susceptibility of cultivars did not correspond well with the zn concentration of the shoot. in contrast, the total amount of zn of shoot was better related to the sensitivity of wheat cultivars to zn deficiency. under zn deficiency, different ability of genotypes to release phytosiderophore from roots was observed. pishtaz exuded more phytosiderophore than alvand. higher zn uptake in zn-efficient wheat genotypes may be attributed to higher release rates of zn-mobilizing phytosiderophores from roots.

Assessment of Genetic Variation and Zinc Deficient Tolerance in Spring Durum Wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) Genotypes in Calcareous Soil with Zinc Deficiency

Low zinc (Zn) availability and its absorption limit wheat production and quality of yield in calcareous soils. In order to identify Zn deficient stress tolerance in wheat, fifteen spring genotypes (Diyarbakir-81; Gediz-75; Svevo; Zenit; Amanos-97; Fuatbey-2000; Balcali-2000; Ceylan-95; Firat-93; Aydin-93; Ozbek; Artuklu; Akcakale-2000; Aday-19; and Ege-88) were evaluated under two conditions (n...

Effect of Soil Applied Zinc Sulphate on Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Grown on a Calcareous Soil in Pakistan

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of soil application of zinc fertilizer on yield and yield components of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Pak-81) grown on calcareous soil in Pakistan. The levels of zinc sulphate were 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 kg ha and the zinc sulphate was combine-drilled at the time of sowing. Zinc sulphate increased the Leaf Area Index, t...

Zinc efficiency is correlated with enhanced expression and activity of zinc-requiring enzymes in wheat.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plants. The ability of plants to maintain significant yields under low Zn is termed Zn efficiency (ZE) and its genetic and mechanistic basis is still not well understood. Previously, we showed that root Zn uptake did not play a role in ZE. In the current study, Zn-efficient and -inefficient wheat (Triticum aestivum) genotypes were grown for 13 d in ch...

Biofortification of Wheat Cultivars to Combat Zinc Deficiency

Zinc (Zn) deficiency caused by inadequate dietary intake is a global nutritional problem, particularly in developing countries. Therefore, zinc biofortification of wheat and other cereal crops is being urgently addressed and highly prioritized as a research topic. A field study was planned to evaluate the influence of zinc application on grain yield, grain zinc content, and grain phytic acid co...

Salivary zinc as an index of zinc status in women fed a low-zinc diet.

The effect of a low-zinc diet on saliva and plasma levels was studied in 12 healthy young women. A diet low in zinc (3.2 mg/day) was fed to the subjects for 22 days. Subjects were determined to be in satisfactory zinc status via analysis of the zinc levels of their diet, hair, plasma, and saliva. During the low-zinc diet, concentrations of zinc in whole mixed saliva remained relatively stable f...

Effect of zinc and boron interaction on growth and mineral composition of lemon seedlings in a calcareous soil

The impact of different concentration of zinc (Zn) and boron (B) on growth and mineral composition of lemon seedlings (Citrus Aurantifolia L.) was studied under greenhouse conditions. We used five concentration levels of B (0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 μg g-1 soil) and three of Zn (0, 5 and 10 μg g-1 soil). Fresh and dry plant weights of the control treatment were strongly decreased with B levels highe...
